Mayor packing bags at Tesco?

Despite some accusations of being anti-Tesco, it is my local supermarket and the one I use most, mainly because I can walk there with the pram.   With that in mind, this press release from Reading Borough Council made me smile.  Imagine having your bags packed by the Mayor, Cllr Deborah Edwards!  Cllr Edwards is working ever so hard to raise money for the Mayors Fund so why not take advantage and raise some money in the process?

Press Release

Shoppers at Tesco's Portman Road branch might see a familiar face at the tills next week as Reading's Mayor Debs Edwards steps up her fundraising campaign.

Cllr Edwards, along with representatives from the six charities she is supporting during her term of office, will be packing bags at the tills for three days. She will also be in the store for a further three days with charity collection buckets and selling her unique Mayor's Fund wristbands.

The Mayor has set herself an ambitious target of raising £60k to support her chosen charities which all involve children, families and vulnerable people. They are Plan UK International, NSPCC, Berkshire Women's Aid, Albert Road Day Centre, Launchpad and the YMCA.

She will be collecting cash from Monday November 21st to Wednesday November 23rd, and then bag packing from November 24th to 26th.

Speaking about the marathon fundraising bid, Cllr Edwards said: "I'm hoping big-hearted Reading people will dig deep into their pockets to help me raise much needed funds for these charities which do such fantastic work to help the more vulnerable members of our society. All these charities, along with many more, are feeling the effects of the current climate and any support is so gratefully received.

Natalie Harrison, Tesco Reading West Community Champion, said: "We are delighted to help support the Mayor of Reading with her charity. We really believe in this project and hope to raise a lot of money from our store."

It's not the first time Tesco has backed the Mayor's fundraising. Earlier this month the store presented a cheque for £1,000 to Albert Road Day Centre."
