For us this all kicks off with Meadow Madness and the Children's Festival taking in the Water Fest, Reading Armed Forces Day (Saturday 29 June 12-5 - Forbury Gardens & Broad Street) and Oxford Road Fun Day (Saturday 6 July 12-4 Kensington Park) along the way. Battle councillors will be at the Oxford Road Fun Day again - look out for the red gazebo!
Both the boys love Meadow Madness and my fingers are firmly crossed hoping for decent weather. Christchurch Meadows is a great day out anyway but the activities at Meadow Madness add some extra sparkle. The Children's Festival then goes on to offer loads more activities in the following fortnight, including half term.

The very popular Reading Children’s Festival returns for its 24th year on Saturday, May 18th, with an action packed two weeks of fun and games for everyone at venues across Reading.
The festival gets off to a flying start with Meadow Madness this Saturday. There will be something for everyone, with sport and music workshops, fun days with art and craft sessions.
This year’s Meadow Madness has a wild animal theme, so go along and join in the wild and wacky fun at the ‘larger than life’ explorer workshops running throughout the day. Try your hand at juggling, uni-cycling, hand-held stilts, spinning plates and walking the tight-wire. The Council’s play rangers will be organising mini sports competitions and the Jelly crew will be making lion masks.
From 11am-3.30pm there will be live entertainment from a variety of local groups and performers at the arena in the middle of Chirstchurch Meadows, where Meadow Madness takes place.
Reading Children’s Festival takes place from May 18th – June 2nd and boasts a varied programme of activities.
A variety of craft workshops and exciting experiences have been organised for children at Reading’s libraries, Reading Museum and sport and leisure centres throughout the fun packed fortnight, including superhero crafts at Central Library on May 31st and decorate your own giant person at Whitley Library also on May 31st.
During the May half-term holiday (May 27th-31st), there is a week of free family fun taking place at various venues.
Some much loved children’s TV characters will be making an appearance at Broad Street Mall. And if you’ve always fancied trying canoeing, then why not go along to a series of free one hour sessions taking place at Reading Canoe Club in Caversham from 10am-4pm.
There is also the chance to try an Olympic sport, with free sessions being run at various venues by fully qualified coaches from Reading Football Club, Reading Rockets Basketball Club, Reading Athletics Club, Reading Royals Synchronised Squad, Reading CTC (the national cycling charity) and Reading Sport and Leisure.
If swimming’s more your thing, there’s a free parent and toddler coached swim session at Central Pool in Battle Street, during half-term and free swimming for kids at Central Pool, Highdown & Academy Sport.
Marian Livingston, Reading’s lead councillor for culture and sport, said: “Reading Children’s Festival is always a fantastic event. The town is absolutely bustling with families during the fortnight who come from miles around to enjoy all the festival has to offer. There’s something for everyone and plenty to do, its tremendous fun and I hope to see lots of children enjoying this year’s events.”
